How to prepare Manhuchu (Samp)

4 Servings ~ 30 minutes
  • 300g samp (manhuchu)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Water

I remember eating samp (Manhuchu) in my childhood days. Before preparing it today I actually hadn’t eaten it in over 2 decades!! So as you probably can imagine, cooking and eating them took me down memory lane in a special way 🙂

Now samp can be classified in the whole grain foods. These are foods which have not been refined to the extent of losing most of their nutritional benefits. So be rest assured that you’re eating healthy when you eat these Manhuchu (samp).

Resources/Equipment You Will Need

  • Heavy base pot/ ordinary pot
  • Teaspoon
  • Bowl

Quick Instructions

  1. Have your samp (300g) ready.
  2. Put it in a bowl/pot and soak it in water overnight or for 8 hours. This will reduce your cooking time drastically!
  3. After the soaking period, discard water used for soaking and put the samp in a pot.  Add enough water to just about cover the samp and salt (1 tsp).
  4. Bring to the boil then reduce heat to a gentle simmer until the samp is cooked through (about 20-30 minutes, depending on how hot your stove top is).
  5. Your samp is done!

So as you’ve seen, there’s not much to preparing samp. If you don’t want to soak them you could still cook them until their tender and cooked through but be rest assured that it is going to take at least thrice the time or more to cook compared to when you pre-soak them. There are many ways to serve you samp. Here I served it with some milk to make a healthy lunch or snack.  Give it a go and let me know how it turns out.
