Paprika and Herb Fried Fish

4-5 Servings ~ 20 minutes
  • 3-4 Medium sized Breams
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic and herb seasoning
  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • 2 tbsp oil + extra for frying

From time to time I do get requests in my inbox for superb fish recipes. This comes as no surprise. We have some of the best fish around here in Zimbabwe especially those from Kariba. Talking about the Kariba bream, not long ago I got an opportunity for someone to send through some really great breams on the bus. It was a little adventure that paid off so well. Of that order I did three distinct recipes. I pan fried it, stewed it and flakes coated it. It was yum.

Fish is overall an amazing ingredient. In my experience it requires little to turn it into a memorable dish. The secret is that fish doesn’t need a great deal of manipulation by way of adding lots of seasoning and spices. You want its natural flavor to come through complimented by minimal spices, herbs and condiments.

So in this case I set out to do just that by doing a simple paprika flavoured fish. The garlic played a needful supporting role. In my book this is so little done to the fish. You’ll be surprised at how tasty this fish is with so little done to it! This is one of those cases where you do little to a dish, it saves you time and presto it rewards you with great flavours. It’s an absolute win-win.

So if you have been wondering what else to do with fish, here goes yet another method to it. Serve it with your preferred starch. This could be roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, fries (chips), rice or Sadza. Not a garlic person? Garlic and herb seasoning may be substituted with dried parsley. You may alternatively grill the fish in the oven @180 degrees Celsius until golden brown. Cheers!!

DO THIS

  1.  Get your ingredients together. Remove the scales from the fish and cut it into medium-sized pieces.
  2. Combine oil, salt, paprika, lemon juice and garlic and herb seasoning in a bowl. Rub this paste onto each fish piece.
  3. Heat a little oil in pan, fry the fish until golden brown, flip it over and fry the other side until golden brown as well. Enjoy!
